Labor is where the money goes. Human agent salaries account for roughly 70% of total support costs, so anything that reduces agent minutes reduces costs.
But two of the biggest savings available to you need no AI at all. This guide covers both the three places AI genuinely helps, what it costs, and the metric that will make you think it failed when it is working.
Work out your cost per ticket first
You cannot tell whether AI saved money without this number. Most support teams have never calculated it.
The formula: total support spend ÷ total tickets handled = cost per ticket
Include agent salaries, helpdesk licenses, and overhead. Worked example: four agents at $45,000 fully loaded, plus $800 a month in tooling, handle 2,000 tickets a month. That is $15,800, or $7.90 per ticket.
Published figures put a human-handled interaction at about $5 to $15, depending on the channel and who is counting. Phone costs more than chat. Chat costs more than email. An AI-handled interaction costs between $0.004 and $1.00.

What AI cannot fix, do this first
Reactive support is expensive. Every ticket you answer is a ticket you failed to prevent.
Ticket avoidance removes the reason a customer contacts you. Ticket deflection answers the question without an agent. Avoidance means the question is never asked, and it costs nothing.
Here is the pattern. A store gets 400 tickets a month asking about an order’s status. Adding the tracking link to the confirmation email removes them. No chatbot, no license, no implementation.
How to find yours:
- Pull your top 20 ticket reasons from the last quarter.
- For each, ask whether the product, the email, or the copy caused it.
- Fix the cause, not the reply.
Common causes worth checking: missing information in transactional emails, unclear billing dates, confusing onboarding steps, and settings buried where nobody looks.
Mapping recurring themes from ticket data is also useful to your product and engineering teams, not just support.
Measure this as falling ticket volume. A rising deflection rate on flat volume means you are answering more questions. Falling volume means you removed the reason for them.
Where AI actually cuts costs

Resolving tickets
An AI agent reads your knowledge base, help center, and ticket history, then answers the customer directly instead of returning a list of articles.
Mature self-service deflects 30% to 60% of incoming tickets. A help center without AI usually reaches 20% to 30%. Adding an agent that resolves conversations roughly doubles it.
Start with high-volume, low-complexity queries. Password resets, order status, billing questions, and refund policies. These deliver the fastest wins and carry the least risk.
Accuracy depends on your content. An AI agent is only as good as the help articles and policies it reads, which is why knowledge base quality moves deflection more than model choice does.
Drafting replies
For tickets that still reach a human, an AI copilot drafts the reply from your knowledge base and past tickets. The agent checks and sends.

The metric trap
Your human handle time will rise
This surprises most teams, and it makes working deployments look broken.
AI takes the easy tickets. What reaches your agents is the harder, more sensitive, more ambiguous work. So average handle time on human-handled tickets goes up, not down.
That is the expected outcome, not a failure. Per-interaction handle time falls across all contacts. Human-only handle time has risen because the mix has changed.
Measure total support spend divided by total tickets resolved. If you measure human AHT alone, a successful deployment appears to be a regression.
What AI costs you
Vendors bill in four ways, and the model determines that your cost is higher than the feature list indicates.
- Per resolution: You pay when the AI solves something. Intercom Fin charges $0.99 per outcome on a $49 monthly basis. Gorgias charges $0.90 per resolved conversation on an annual billing plan.
- Per ticket or conversation: You pay once per conversation, regardless of how long it runs. eesel AI charges $0.40. Tidio Lyro charges $0.50.

Your bill rises when the AI works
Per-resolution pricing ties your cost to your success rate.
Take a team handling 2,000 tickets a month on Fin at $0.99:
- At 30% deflection, 600 resolutions cost $594
- At 60% deflection, 1,200 resolutions cost $1,188
You doubled deflection and doubled that part of your bill. The savings are still real, because those extra 600 tickets were worth about $4,700 in agent time. But $594 went back to the vendor.
On a flat plan, the second case costs the same as the first.
There is a fair case for per-resolution pricing. The vendor earns only when it resolves something, and failed attempts are free. That alignment is worth paying for if answer quality is your main concern. Just understand that your AI cost becomes a permanent share of your ticket volume.

Licenses and add-ons are a support cost, too, and they are easy to audit.
Per-seat charges stack

Four questions to ask any vendor:
- Are seats included, or billed per user?
- Is the human handoff included, or is it an add-on?
- Does an AI resolution also consume my helpdesk ticket allowance?
- What is the rate inside my allowance, not just the overage rate?

Now subtract what the AI costs, which depends entirely on the billing model:

The mistake to avoid
Cutting costs at the expense of service ends up costing more later.
Klarna is the public example. In February 2024, it said an AI assistant handled two-thirds of customer service chats, work equal to 700 agents, cutting resolution time from 11 minutes to under two.
In May 2025, CEO Sebastian Siemiatkowski told Bloomberg the company had focused too much on cost, and quality dropped. Klarna resumed hiring human agents.
The volume figure was accurate. The outcome underneath it was not good enough.
Two guards against this. Keep a clear escalation path to a human for complex or sensitive issues. And pair every cost metric with a quality metric from the same set of conversations: CSAT, re-contact rate, and escalation quality.
Reducing support tickets in SaaS

- Ship documentation with the release. Feature launches create predictable ticket spikes, and most are documentation gaps.
- Answer in the product. In-app messaging catches questions before they become tickets.
